Introducing the newest addition to the family, the GTI Mk5. After much debate as to exactly what color and package to get a final decision was finally made and a Untied Grey no pack was it! I was looking to get leather but the $3000+ price tag just to get leather with the package 2 wasn't worth it in my opinion so I went with the package 0 with no sunroof and no satelite radio. When I first saw the plaid interior in pictures I wasn't too sure about it, but after seeing it in person and seeing how well the interior just matched the rest of the car I was sold on it and I'm even thinking of getting my sofa recovered in Interlagos Cloth!!

The purchase was made from the premier VW dealership in the Tampa Bay Area, Reeves Import Motorcars. Unlike many dealerships in the area Reeves was not hiking up the price on the new GTI and was selling for sticker price (btw sticker was about $22,800 for mine which includes the destination charge and optional floormats). If you are in the market for a new GTI or any VW, Audi, Porsche or BMW be sure to ask for Jay DuPre (813-933-2811) and tell him JWelty sent you! He is very knowledgable and knows about the aftermarket scene. One other plus about purchasing from Reeves is the fact they will give you a loaner car for free when you bring your car in for service or warranty work!

Driving this car is reminds me a lot of my old 1987 GTi that was my first ever VW. First off it actually handles well stock!  Something my most recent project mk4 Jetta did not do well at all. None the less the ride height on the GTi is very high and the first mods planned are bigger wheels and suspension. The European GTi sits about 15mm lower than the US version. Apparently, in order to meet DOT bumper requirements VW had to raise the US GTi.

There are so many cool features that have been added to the mk5 GTI. One of which is the ability to change the door lock and unlock modes through the steering wheel controls. There is also a vent in the middle of dash that directs the air straight up into the window for when you get sick of the air blowing in your face. At night there is red LED lighting that gives a very low key red glow around the shifter/cup holder area. The rear VW emblem also acts as the handle to open the hatch, simply push the top of the VW emblem and it rotates forward so you can pull up on the bottom of the VW emblem.. Pretty slick! The optional rubber floor mats have the same honeycomb chape as the front grill and were the only option I got. The glove box and center console storage are air conditioned to keep cool... You also get two extra oh $#!^ handles located next to the shifter! Needless to say there are a ton of extra features that you wont find on the previous body.

So whats planned for this project car?? Well first off will be wheels and suspension, look for that to be posted soon! After than a chip, intake and turbo back exhaust system will the main performance upgrades. From there I don't know just yet, but stay tuned for all the updates.
